Put Some Honey in Your Tea | 5 ways to cultivate your creative spirit

I believe we are all creative.
Sure, some of us are entrepreneur “think outside the box” creative and some of us are crafty “hodge-podge wreath making” creative, but it all comes from the same place. Curiosity. . . slowing down to look at things differently, appreciate life. Remember the value of things.
This week Mary Oliver died. Being a lover of words, she’s comforted me and shook me over the years. This one, you’ve likely heard,

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

If considered out of context it might appear to be motivating, to get moving and run quickly towards your dreams. But truly it’s the opposite. We get one life. It’s extraordinary and rare to even exist. So slow down. Appreciate your breath, the sounds of home and the tenderness of friendship. The grace of motherhood. The winter birds scavenging outside your kitchen window.
I’m always looking for reminders to cultivate my creative spirit. Here are a few I’ve come up with and practice. I encourage you to find your own. And tell me about them.

5 ways to cultivate your creative spirit

1. Warm drinks
There’s just something about the comfort of a warm drink to soothe & soften & open you up creatively. Honey is extra credit.

2. Sacred space

Create a space for yourself. A quiet zone. It can be just a chair in your house, a corner with a meditation mat, or a rocker on the front porch.

3. Find nature

Fresh air. There is scientific evidence now that proves what we all know. Being outside makes our lives better.

4. Be of service

While creativity and soulfulness are inside jobs, the more you make your life about others the more emotionally full you feel. Fullness that stirs your creative soul.

5. You are what you eat is true for your mind

Just like with food, you are what you eat. Want to be smarter? Read & research & learn. Want to be more soulful? Surround yourself with soulful content. My home is scattered with books and coffee mugs. Podcasts and growth mindset audio books play while I work. I’ve curated my social media feeds to “feed” that part of me. What you read, listen to, and surround yourself with matters. Nourish your spirit.

Palms up & open,

Britt
