CHASING THE LIGHT ~ Indianapolis family photographer

I tell every family I photograph, I want shoot as close to sunrise or sunset as possible. I know, I know, you have kiddos and sunset is like 9pm in the summer!!! But let me tell you WHY it’s worth the nap adjustment & snack prep. Better yet. . . let me show you.

The hour directly after sunrise and before sunset is often called the GOLDEN hour or the MAGIC hour. The name alone sounds inviting right? You know I’m all about magic.
The reason for this name is sunlight at this time is warmer in tone & much softer then when the sun is higher in the sky. People look prettier in softer light! It’s just more flattering. Midday sun can cause lots of shadows, too bright skin, and squinting. Let’s be honest, we want your eyes open and your skin looking gorgeous.

Sunset light is coming from an angle, so it adds dimension to your portraits. Dimension adds interest, taking your pictures from “just okay” to having depth and emotion. But the REAL reason I want you to give them an early nap, pack a snack and head out later in the evening is FEELING. I want you to FEEL something when you see your photographs. I don’t really want to take the “everyone looking and smiling traditional picture” you could have taken in a Walmart studio. Borrrriiiing. I want you to feel the connection your family has. Feel the warmth in your heart when you see your introverted kiddo not looking at the camera, surrounded by light, or your spirited child laughing out loud with that luminous glow behind them.

Try something for me. Think about how you FEEL when you’re kitchen windows are flooded with warm golden light in the morning or late evening. I feel happy, warm, content.
Now how do you feel in your kitchen midday?     It’s light.     It’s okay.        It’s ORDINARY.
